The B&H Light Meter Buying Guide

The Spectra Cine Spectra PhoRad Photometer is designed to measure the light intensity of medical diagnostic imaging displays, film viewing boxes, image monitors, collimator light fields, etc. for radiologists and radiographers. Accuracy and reliability of diagnosis greatly depend upon the conditions under which these images are viewed.

The rate of medical misdiagnosis (estimated to be as high as 30% by a number of research studies), led to the creation of guidelines and standards for viewing lighting levels of diagnostic images by the Federal Drug Administration, American College of Radiology, the American Cancer Society and the European community of radiologists.

  • The PhoRad Photometer ensures that these viewing standards are being met with accurate measurement of light output as well as measurement of ambient light. This portable battery-powered instrument is easy to use, cost effective and reads directly in candelas per meter squared (cd/m2) and nits as set forth in the new standards outlined in the Standard Practice for Radiographic Examination (ASTM E-1742-08). It also measures the viewing room ambient background illumination falling on the viewer surface as set forth in the new standards.
